• Karstic Weddings (every 2 years during the last Sunday
of August): it is the most known traditional activity in the
area. It takes place in the town of Monrupino and begins one
week before the real wedding with parties to celebrate the last
days of the groom and the bride as single persons. These parties
take place in the small restaurants of the area and the “osmizze”,
the traditional hospitality houses. On Sunday morning all the
participants wear the traditional costumes and go together to
the small church of the town for the ceremony. After the
ceremony the married couple passes through 3 arches made of
flowers and juniper and arrives to the square of Rupingrande
where dances and celebrations begin.
• Osmize: they started in the 18th century, when the
farmers obtained the right to sell directly their products for a
limited period. Nowadays the tradition is still very strong:
many osmize regularly alternate their seasonal openings along
all the area of Gorizia and Trieste provinces, in particular in
the Karstic area. You can easily recognize them thanks to the
“branches”, ivy branches put in strategic positions on the
street to signal where the osmize are. The environment of the
osmize is very pleasant, informal and familiar and they offer
the possibility to taste sliced ham, salami and other local
products, obviously accompanied by the famous wines of the
Karstic area.
