The offer of the cities that you can visit in
Slovenia is very varied. From great city like Lubiana, Maribor
and Novo Mesto, to the smaller but very precious as Ptuj,
Castagnevizza on the Cherca, Skofja, Loka, Bled and Idria, and
to conclude the delicious towns of the coast: Capodistria, Isola,
Pirano and Portorose. Between nature, art and culture, you can
also have a break in the well-equipped thermal stations, but
also enjoy the thousand lights of its famous casinos.
Lubiana (Ljublijana) surprises its
visitors with the rich inheritance of the ancient and medieval
era, with its buildings of Renaissance, Baroque and art nouveau,
with the works of the known architect Plečnik. Capital of the
Slovenian State, main political, economic, artistic and cultural
centre of the Country, is in a central position of the national
territory connected by a good system of paths to all the
principals centres of Slovenia, as well as to Trieste. Its
medieval historical centre, sheltered by the shade of the
ancient castle is situated on the banks of the homonymous river.
To the tourist Lubiana look like a city from the everlasting
charm, where the rich historical, cultural and architectural
patrimony is counterbalanced by an unstoppable metropolis of
avant-garde.
In the oriental part of
Slovenia, only 18 kilometres from the border with Austria, is
situated Maribor. University and cultural centre, with
the lyric and prose theatres, museums, galleries of art, Maribor
can boast a large number of rests of the Renaissance culture.
The historical centre of the city on the Drava with the Lent, ex
fluvial port, is very interesting. Here close to the river there
are the Tower of the Justice of the XIV century and the Tower of
the Water, where today it is possible tasting good Slovenian
wines. The city entertains a great number of events of various
types.
Next to Maribor stands one of the most ancient Slovenian cities,
Ptuj, by intact and well preserved medieval beauty.
East of Lubiana, next to the border with the Croatia, is
situated Novo Mesto, founded in 1365 by the Austrian Duke
Rodolfo IV of Absburgh, on a large bight of the river Krka, to
the top of a rocky precipice; The city today is an important
centre of the Bassa Carniola, and guards an interesting medieval
nucleus that has preserved in the centuries the original road
pattern and some part of the defensive boundaries.
Next to Novo Mesto is located Castagnevizza on the Cherca
(Kostanjevica ob Krki), said "the small Venice of Slovenia" for
its position on an islet in the centre of the river Krka and
connected to the land by two bridges at the extremities of the
principal street; the intense green and the presence of elegant
swans are the ideal frame for this place out of the time. It is
the smallest and most ancient city in Slovenia, declared in its
totality national monument.
In western Slovenia it
is situated Skofja Loka, considered the most beautiful
and better preserved medieval city of Slovenia, where the rich
historical patrimony still lives in the intact and
uncontaminated nature.
Next to Skofja Loka
there is Bled, prestigious thermal place famous for its
climate and the benefits of the waters, so that, at the
beginning of ‘900, became the preferred destination of the
nobles of the Austro-Hungarian empire; the city also boasts
three exceptional spots: the old castle, the lake and the islet
in the middle of the lake with the ancient church.
In the same zone is located Idria (Idrija), a small industrial
centre in the green woods full of game, and famous for a mine
of mercury and the prestigious production of laces.
Finally, deserve a visit the delicious towns of the coast,
almost all of ancient origin and from the characteristic
Venetian aspect: Capodistria (Koper), with its port and
the delicious historical centre; Isola D’Istria (Izola),
situated on a calcareous islet, today connected to the land by a
thin strip of earth, dwelling of fishermen and custodian of
jewels such as the Mandracchio, the Piazza Grande with the
ancient Palazzo Comunale and the Dome of St. Mark; but also the
more impressive and monumental Pirano (Piran), whose old
city on the extremity of a promontory is constituted by a
complex of Venetian constructions with Gothic and Baroque
buildings alternated with the houses salt pane workers and
fishermen; and finally Portorose (Portoroz), by the
modern and elegant aspect but famous in Europe for its precious
and well equipped casinos.
