Throughout the midst of 16th century a lot of noble family of
Venice decided to invest their huge wealth, coming from the
commerce in the Far East, to carry out great rural activities.
So, the family of Corner, Barbaro, Badoer, Emo, Grimani and
Foscari, holders of the economical political power (together
with great philosophers and personalities who were very fond of
art) found in Andrea Palladio their ideal architect.
This is the origin of the
characteristic Villa in Veneto. An original structure which had
great success meeting the aesthetic and functional requirements.
The ability of Palladio was to use characteristics of imperial
Rome known by the studying of ancient texts and frequent travels
with his teacher Gian Giorgio Trissino, and combined it with the
humanism philosophy. According with he underlines the not only
religious but also cultural role of temples.
So near the base structure started to be erected the typical “barchesse”,
stables, colonies dwellings.
All the
Palladian villas were realized at the end of 16th century. The
pleasures of a life in contact with nature were a second choice,
the main reason was the economy: the needs of investing in
intensive farming. Subsequently in the decades, with more and
more decision the villa assumed the character of "place of
delights" and also a kind of status symbol.
The "vacation", the stay in villa, usually was in coincidence
with the two principal harvest periods of the agricultural (the
reaping, among half June and end July and the vintage, from
October to half November) by the 18th century it started to
assume an aspect of social distinction for the rich Venetian
middle class, who also decorated themselves, with noble titles.
This fashion, typically Venetian, constituted the main subject
for the Trilogia della Villeggiatura in which Carlo
Goldoni represented the evolution of the society of that time.
In the three centuries after the death of Palladio were built
hundred villas in the country of the Venetian hinterland and
along the main river and stream. The new social economy
conception spread arriving very far and even in the New World,
in the great plantations of the south of the United States of
America.
