Friuli Venezia Giulia is one of the best known boundary lands. It
has always played an important role in the history of States and
Empires. In 1915, at the beginning of the First World War, the
Italian –Austrian conflict was entirely fought in this area; it was
only at the end of the conflict that the Austrian Empire gave
Venezia Giulia back to Italy.
Wars and battles are but a small part of the difficulties that the
region has had to face in the last century. The earthquake of 1976
and the Vajont Catastrophe, could have seriously damaged the economy
and the spirit of this region. However, thanks to the strength of
its people, everything that had been destroyed was rebuilt in a
short time using innovative techniques such as the one used in Egypt
to save Abu Simbel Temples.
Surrounded by three similar yet different cultures:
Latin, Germanic and Slavonic. Friuli Venezia Giulia is full
of ancient traditions, customs and professions. This region offers a
perfect balance between tourism, nature and authentic atmosphere.
The pleasant landscape is accompanied by interesting and varied
geographical features: from the wide beaches of the coastline to the
mountain area with hills and the Alps, from the little rural
village to the industrial modern city.
From the circle of Alpine Mountains, in the Northern part of FVG,
close to Austria, there is a region called Carnia. This
beautiful mountain area has maintained its folk traditions: customs,
dialects, architecture and cuisine. Carnia offers countless
unexpected sights, uncontaminated wild nature and Medieval churches
and towns perfect for winter but also summer holiday.
If you move a little bit to the east, the landscape doesn’t change:
snowy mountain peaks and wonderful mountain lakes is the setting of
the small villages of the Tarvisiano area, located in the
forests of the Valcanale.
If you get into the Pordenone province, you will see a
natural environment, almost untouched by men and protected by the
authorities of the Friuli Dolomites and Prescudin parks. Here
there is one of the most equipped and famous skiing centers of the
region: Piancavallo.
Moving just few kilometers, you can find the wonderful seaside
resorts of the coast: from the long beaches of Lignano Sabbiadoro
to the magic atmosphere of the Grado Lagoon, from the
spectacular cliffs where the Duino Castle is located to the
Venetian charm of the antique and colorful Muggia.
A taste of the best gastronomic specialties of the region,
accompanied by the famous wines of Friuli…and then go to the
discover of castles, archeological sites and art cities.
And then last but not of smaller importance, the four capital cities
of the region:
Trieste, Gorizia, Udine and Pordenone.
