Called
"the emerald of Europe" for the predominant colour of its
landscape, Slovenia extends between the Alps, the Mediterranean
sea and the plain of Pannonia. It boasts all the beauties of the
old continent and offers to the visitor everything he can
require: mountains, spectacular Karst caves, modern thermal
complexes, city for all the tastes, from gorgeous metropolis to
small historical and art cities, from villages of fishermen to
splendid castles and medieval dwellings.
Very
suggestive the only National park, the Tricorno (Triglav),
where all the mountain sports are practiced in summer and
winter. A stones throw from the park there is the important
tourist centre of Bled, facing the banks of the
homonymous lake with the delicious small island in the centre.
About
natural landscapes, although wide less than fifty kilometres,
also the Slovenian coast is well-known: next to Strugnano
grows a thick vegetation and has been founded a Natural Reserve
to protect the only cliff that rises 80 meters on the sea and is
the tallest wall of flysch of the whole Adriatic coast. In this
area stand also the Salt pans of Spicciole, already
mentioned in the XII century and declared Natural Park in 1989
for the importance of the naturalistic patrimony; the particular
habitat of the salt pans is in fact rich of flora and fauna,
very important from the point of view of ornithology, because
here birds find a warm climate and abundant food, ideal
conditions for their survival. Today there are over 200 species,
80 of them regularly nest here.
The thin
costal area between Italy and Croatia is also well-known for the
delicious towns that hosts, where the austere medieval aspect
discloses the unmistakable Venetian influence and where the
pleasant family atmosphere characterized the suburbs of
fishermen: Pirano and Isola.
On the
coast, very ancient but by a modern aspect it is Capodistria;
it is one of the main port of the Adriatic sea and in its gulf
numerous sail regattas are disputed. In summer is
organized the Festival estivo del Litorale. Also the
outskirts and the country are really beautiful: on the walls of
the precipice near Črni Kal and to Osp, free climbing lovers
will have satisfied, while the country excels for the specific
offer of wine and gastronomy.
The long
tourist tradition of Portorose is linked to the presence
of the numerous casinos, frequented by tourists of all
Europe, and to the good offer of hotels and restaurants. In its
close hinterland there are ancient and interesting villages,
among which the picturesque town of Cristoglie (Hrastovlje)
with its famous frescos undoubtedly deserves a visit.
Very interesting also the gastronomic offer, in the elegant
restaurants of the coast or the cities but also in the
characteristic osmice, local version of the osmize of
Trieste.
People
who loves comfort and fitness will finally find an offer of
high-level in the large number of thermal centres.
