Venice is unique city of its kind in the
world. Erected about 1500 years ago on the islands of the
lagoon, the city developed influenced by its characteristic
habitat, in a completely different way from the other Italian or
European cities.
In a period when all Italy was only a deserted barren land
spread by marshes and forests, Venice was already related with
the East, through Byzantine Empire falling into decay, last heir
of Cesaris.
Venetians built one of the biggest economic power of the age of
Renaissance filling their city with thousands art works, so that
today Venice is well-known as one of the world capital city
of art.
The list of the masterpieces have to be visited by travellers
coming in this city, is really endless.
Among the stately churches, of course you have to visit the
San Marco Basilica which stands on the homonymous square,
the best known and full of history. While the two gothic
basilicas of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari and
Santissimi Giovanni e Paolo,
are the masterpieces of the Franciscan and Dominican
orders, considered like museums for the large amount of their
art works.
Santa Maria della Salute is a real
jewel of Venetian baroque and one of the best example of baroque
in the world; it fascinates the visitors with its curves and
volutes facing the Grand Canal.
Santa Maria dei Miracoli, instead,
is a little church of the Renaissance period, precious like a
jewel case full of gems. San Zaccaria is a big
Renaissance church where are visible the influences of the
different eras it passed through. The inside is plenty of
paintings, some very famous. The churches of San Giorgio
Maggiore and del Santissimo Redentore are two
examples of balance and sense of composition created by
Palladio.
The availability of buildings to visit is incredible and most of
them hosts exhibitions or museums. The very popular Palazzo
Ducale often houses very important exhibitions besides its
collections of Art and History. The sight of the beautiful
gothic Ca’ d’Oro, is still more impressive from Grand
Canal, and you have also to visit Ca’ Vendramin Calergi,
a building today seat of the Casiṇ Municipale. The
Gallerie of Accademia present a huge collection of paintings
of Venetian School from the beginnings to the 1700.
The Archaeological Museum of San Marco square is a
compulsory stop for people keen of archaeology: it hosts a rich
collection of Roman and Greek statues, Roman frescos, Greek and
Etruscan pottery, Egyptian mummies, coins, small sculptures and
other findings. Nearby the Museo Correr exposes Venetian
Renaissance paintings of 1800 and collections of maps, coins,
doge costumes, pottery, weapons and uniforms.
In the Galleria Internazionale di Arte Moderna (Ca’Pesaro),
are exhibited interesting collections of Italian Modern Art
between 19th-20th centuries. The Galleria Franchetti is
situated in the buildings of Ca’d’Oro and boasts works of
Mantegna, Bellini, Carpaccio and Tiziano, besides sculptures,
pottery and bronzes.
The Peggy Guggenheim collection, situated in Ca’Vernier
dei Leoni facing the Grand Canal, presents one of the most
important collection of contemporary art of the world. The
Pinacoteca Querini Stampalia, among the homonymous
Foundation preserved an important collection of paintings from
‘400 to ‘700. The Museo del Settecento Veneziano,
whose seat is in the beautiful baroque building Ca Rezzonico,
hosts works by Pietro ed Alessandro Longhi, Piazzetta,
Gianbattista and Giandomenico Tiepolo, Rosalba Carriera,
Francesco and Gianantonio Guardi.
Finally, characteristic institutions of
Venice are the School, brotherhoods of citizens with
social aims. The Scuola Grande di San Rocco, still
existent, one time taking care of the plague victims, today is a
museum with the largest number of Jacopo Tintoretto works.
Also the Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni
presents many works by Vittore Carpaccio.
However the beauty of the city are not only
its art jewels, but also the atmosphere of its calli, the
charm of bridges and canals and the emotion of a gondola trip.
If you get lost in this Venice, far from the tourism itineraries
you could get the real soul of this city hanging by earth and
sea, which will stay in your heart for ever.
