Verona can be considered
the second most important city of art after Venice in the Veneto
region.
Of Palo-Venetian origin, Verona was inhabited by the Retii
people, later became an Etruscan dwelling and finally by 89 b.C.
Roman.
In Middle age became a
very important centre under the role of Scaligeri and after
under the Republic of Venice.
Verona has mainly medieval features, but
where it is possible to look down on the city from a height, a
Roman urban structure can still be seen in its regular and
direct street, buildings...so different by the random and
confused Medieval structures. What impress the visitors from the
first sight is the incredible number of expressions of art,
history and culture grouped in one single city.
The Roman remains are a must for tourist: the
Arena, the Arco dei Gavi, the Ponte Pietra, the Porta dei
Borsari, the Porta dei Leoni and the Teatro Romano.
The Arena is about 2000 years old and is one of the biggest monuments of ancient Rome. Built in the first
century a.C, it was situated outside the walls housing wrestling
matches. Since 1913 when was staged the first “Aida”, it has
become the most famous outdoor theatre on the international
scene.
Among the holy buildings deserve a visit the
Dome, the Church of San Zeno Maggiore and the
Cathedral: true masterpieces of the Romanesque art.
Monuments rich with sculptures and paintings amongst which the
altar-piece of San Zeno by Andrea Mantegna and the
altar-piece of the Assunta by the famous Tiziano.
The charm of the Loggia del Consiglio, attributed to
Fra’Giocondo, the beautiful palaces and doors by Michele
Sanmicheli are just some of the many examples of the flourishing
of Renaissance in this area.
Verona city of
history and art but also city of love for it became the stage of
the famous Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. You can see the sign
of this romantic tragedy visiting the House and the Balcony of
Juliet, her tomb, and Romeo’s House.
In the Civico Museo of Castelvecchio,
built by 1354 and restored by Carlo Scarpa, has exhibited an
important collection of paintings and sculptures from Middle
ages to ‘700.
Few steps from Verona and… here it is the
Garda lake!! A destination to discover or a real passion for
who already knew it!
Along the Venetian lakeside shore, called
Olive-trees Riviera for the growing of these trees, are
located Peschiera, Valeggio sul Mincio,
Borghetto, Lazise, Bardolino, Torri del
Benaco, Brenzone and Malcesine, beautiful
small towns with villas, castles and walls, precious and
suggestive examples of Venetian art in charming natural
landscape.
The resorts of Riviera degli Ulivi surprise
also the gourmets, who could discover the pleasures of a
particular gastronomy, based on lake fishes such as: tenches,
eels, pikes, perches and bleaks which cookers use for risotto,
pasta, timbale and a variety of tastes combined with wonderful
white wines or rosé or robust aromatic red wines.
The pleasures of the table are accompanied by
the emotion of taste this delicious dishes in a beautiful
scenery, enriched by wonderful residences, gift of the artists
that went and stopped in these places captured by its magic
atmosphere.
