RAINIER<\/strong>, <strong>MT. ST HELENS<\/strong> e <strong>MT. Il nome inglese gli venne dato a fine Settecento dall&#8217;esploratore <strong>George Vancouver<\/strong>. E il pennacchio di fumo che spesso esce dalla cima ci ricorda che questa <strong>non \u00e8 una montagna qualunque<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-3 is-cropped\"><ul <\/strong>(2547 m)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ancora nelle SOUTH CASCADES, e ancora nello Stato di WASHINGTON, andiamo a vedere <strong>Mount Saint Helens<\/strong>, tristemente noto per la catastrofica <strong>eruzione del 1980<\/strong> che liber\u00f2 un&#8217;energia pari a <strong>21.000 bombe atomiche<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" prima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Si risveglia il<strong> 20 marzo 1980<\/strong>, quando i sismografi dell\u2019Universit\u00e0 di Seattle registrano un terremoto di magnitudo 4,1. Il fianco nord <strong>si stacca e frana a valle<\/strong>, mentre un\u2019esplosione provoca una nube di cenere incandescente che si sposta alla velocit\u00e0 di <strong>100 chilometri orari<\/strong> distruggendo tutto lungo il percorso. Un evento epocale!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oggi Mount Saint Helens \u00e8 tutelato come <strong>National Volcanic Monument<\/strong>. Un Visitor Center affacciato sul cratere ci consente di coglierlo in tutta la sua drammaticit\u00e0. Oggi \u00e8 considerato un <strong>vulcano dormiente<\/strong>, come Mount Rainier, ed \u00e8 coperto da <strong>ghiacciai<\/strong>. Eppure anche lui, cos\u00ec come gli altri vulcani delle Cascades, dopo l\u2019eruzione di Mount Saint Helens \u00e8 stato oggetto di numerosi studi e inserito tra i sorvegliati speciali.
